Here are some more recent sketches. The middle one is inspired by a Rackham picture, I think from A Mid-summers Night Dream. The little crown is inspired by Mike Mignola. He always has these cool floating crowns in his comic. And on the bottom is something I sketched while reading Dahl's The BFG. After seeing so much new art work by so many amazing artists whose blogs I visit I feel that I have to work even harder and raise my standards even higher. I'm working on a book right now and giving each painting a ton of attention and care.

The big-eared guys are great! I love seeing the sketching process!
Mmm Floating Crowns! It's nice to imagine them on people when you look out of the window and see them passing in the street.
I know, I wish I had one. Maybe a floating tiara...
I love seeing sketches, thanks for sharing these! Also, I was just in the library today and heard some kid yelling "BFG! BFG!" all excited while looking at the library catalog. It's great that even with video games (which I love too) and high tech toys/movies, kids are still excited over books.
gli sketch sono ancora più persoanli del disegno completo perchè identificano la personalità dell'illustraotre...il tratto della matita sulla carta da una idea di come siamo fatti, del nostro carattere...mi piacciono veramente tanto...
Thanks Stefano! I love to seeother peoples sketches, sometimes I like sketches better than finished paintings.
I agree about sketches often being better than the finishes...that's certainly true for me and the big challenge in doing a finish is not to loose that "inner life" that the sketches often have...trying to polish something often kills it. It's a never ending pursuit to try to keep it.
I agree Stephanie that it's a hard thing to balance.
