The automaton whirred and creaked with the sound of protesting clockwork. It sat forward slightly in a jerky, lifeless movement. The parlor filled with a thick smoky substance. The speaker crackled and hissed and then a voice issued forth that no one had heard in almost two hundred years. When it had finished the girls knew that they must destroy the key. The doors would remain open always but no one would be able to control them. Walking with monsters was the price to keep away the tyrants.
