I'm being nudged into a cartoon world, and I'm pretty happy about it to tell the truth. On the left is my original concept for a character in the comic I'm working on; Jeff VanderMeer's The Situation. The editor wanted it less tight, more expressive. I told her that's how I'd draw all the time if I had any guts! So I came up with the guy on the right. I'm really, really happy with the redesign and it makes the whole project one hundred times more exciting. And I draw faster this way. That's just a nice side effect. Also, I'm very happy with the way watercolour and gouache looks over a brush and ink drawing. I somehow have misplaced all my watercolour tubes so I had to use my traveling half pan set and liked using it a lot. I wasted less paint this way.
What does everyone think of the two designs? I think the second one is much better suited to a comic book. I have very smart editors.

i like both, but thats true the second one fit better for a comic book
i like his face very much !!
i nice to be push in another way, han ? ;)
i cant wait the see the others draws of the comic !!!
its gonna be amazing
and BRAVO for your work, i discovered your blog a week ago but i was too shy to put comments (cause i not very good in english to express myself)
feep on the great work
i follow you :)
Comics or not, the guy on the right is much more expressive and 'alive'. I like it. i've been enjoying watching your work process over the last few weeks - it's been interesting and educational. Keep at it!
Thanks so much Marie Eve! Your English is great, I should be shy about my French!
Thanks so much, SJ! That's exactly what my editor said about the designs. I think when I'm worried about doing a good drawing I tighten up too much.
very interesting is good to always keep an open mind in art, and expand one's comfort zones :D
Thanks Scorp!
:) Hooray! i'm so happy that your works are better and better now! your work is so great for illustration, graphic novel and comic, trust me. ;)
Thanks so much Mall! That means a lot, you know how much I love your work.
Man that costume looks fun to draw. The pose on the right looks much more natural, the arch to the back, and the turn of the head work much better than the straight on upright drawing on the left. Also the costume is much cooler- did I mention I like the costume?
Thanks so much Shane! I think it just proves Alex Toth right: attitude is more convincing then anatomy. The costume is part medieval serf, part lab coat and part stolen from Shaun Tan.
These are really nice, I like the one on the right a lot as well. Maybe that 3/4 angle is just more dynamic? He feels more engaging :]
Both are very nice; the one on the right is more you.
hmmm.... I looked and looked and looked, and i hate to say but i like the guy on the left! The guy on the left looks like he has low self esteem... (oh dear...or is that me?)
Thanks Erin!
Thanks Jeff!
Thanks Messy! That's actually the look I'm going for, very worried and no confidence.
I, of course, like both of them. The subtle differences between the two are very cool. I can see the one on the right, say, being used in the comic and the one on the left perhaps for the cover, if it came to that. Both are wonderful. I am, to say the least, unable to choose!
Have the guts. Draw how you want. It is your language and when you draw from the heart it shines through. And have courage as editors may be good, but they are not always right. (sometimes they are though and that makes me really frustrated)
well in that case then the second one is perfect!
It's really OK with me if you prefer the first, lol. My wife does.
I like the extra refinements of the character in your second guy. You've achieved a design an expressiveness that is uniquely you, and I love it!
Thanks so much Angela!
