Vandermeer Interview

I wanted to let everyone know I have a great, brief interview with one the very best fantasists currently writing Jeff Vandermeer on my other blog, The Meta Chronicles. I'm not exaggerating, Jeff's an amazing writer and anthologist and his insights into Steampunk are fascinating. Please drop in and check it out.

Self Portrait Doodle With Necktie

For some reason I've become obsessed with collecting old neckties....This is a sketchbook doodle based on a photograph and coloured in photoshop.

I Need An Army Of Automaton Drawers

It looks more and more as though I have a full years worth of work ahead of me, which is amazing and I'm pretty fortunate to be in that position but I still feel a bit overwhelmed. I'll be able to talk more openly about these projects later on. They are both incredible projects and I can't believe I'm attached to either. Julie and Henry are still visiting family in Ontario and I miss them terribly. A good night's sleep is not worth their absence, I'm such a family guy. But it's great all of Julie's relatives get to meet Henry, so I'm glad they're there.
I'm reading a lot right now. All books for the Meta Chronicles blog, so lots of out there science fiction. Great stuff.
The above drawing is for a friend in Brooklyn.

Head Down And A Comic That Never Happened

Above is a page from a comic that was rejected. It's kind of sad because I really liked it but at the same time I've become so busy it's hard to imagine fitting this in. It was my first attempt at a sort of steampunk narrative, I did it after the Fogg academy stuff was posted but before I started scripting a larger work with Shane Oakley.
And I'm working like mad lately. So much to do!

Dream Project With Fish

This is the reason I got into illustration in the first place. I found out that I'll definitely part of this amazing project, a science fiction comic book written by one of my favorite authors Jeff VanderMeer. Jeff writes the kind of stories that give me the same sense of wonder and surprise I got when I first started reading science fiction and fantasy. If you've never read his work please do, it's simply amazing. You can read more about this project here.
Also, I woke up this morning to find it was featured on the Forbidden Planet blog, a total thrill for me.

I've locked myself Out of my blog!!

Apologies for the lack of posting! I'm so swamped and I've also managed to lock myself out of my own blog. trust me i had good intentions...I installed a program by Google called Leechblock which stops you from going to websites during your work day. It's an amazing tool for being more productive. So now I can't access Gmail, Blogger or Twitter between 10 am and 5 pm Atlantic time. Which is usually when I post. oh well, I'll figure it out.

Meta Chronicles

I've launched a new blog today! It's called Meta Chronicles and it's about science fiction. Specifically it's about anachronistic science fiction ; retrofuture, steampunk, etc. The blog will explore contemporary science fiction that explores old technologies and societies and old science fiction that explored the future with an interesting aesthetic. The Meta Chronicles will be about stories and art and I'm hoping each post will feature either a book of interest or an artist. The first post features a painting by one of my favorites Tom Kidd. The blog banner is by Steve Thomas. Later in the month there will be an interview with Mike Mignola.
I likely will not be updating this blog as frequently as this one, maybe once or twice a week. Meta Chronicles will have posts that are more thoughtful and a little longer.
So please come visit, comment,argue...I'd love to see you.

Awash In Ink

Another picture I can't really talk about. This picture is from the same comic that I showed earlier. This is the "villain" although that term doesn't really apply. It's funny, I realized doing this that my villains aren't usually human. I'm almost done this leg of the work on this project. Later today I'll start in on the next project, which is a project with one of my favorite writers Jeff VanderMeer. If you have not read his work please run out and buy his work now, He's incredible and this is a really, really exciting project. more on that later.
Also, I'm launching my new blog tomorrow! The MetaChronicles : A history of anachronism. It's about retrofuture science fiction. I'll post about it tomorrow.
In the meantime tell me what you think of the banner for the new blog.

An Interesting Year So Far....

I apologize for the absence of posts lately. Things have been nutty. At the moment I'm working on completing two different comic book submissions, which are both extremely work intensive. I also am getting over a cold. I'm hoping these two submissions will be the projects I'm working on over the next couple of years.
I also wanted to leave the last post up for a while. I still need help with new blog. I'll be putting up the first post on Monday.
I have also chosen an agent. I'm lucky enough to be represented by the Howard Morhaim agency. They represent some of my favorite authors(Michael Moorcock, Jeff VanderMeer...) so it's very exciting. This means I'll be selling myself increasingly as a graphic novel guy and will be doing less editorial work and book covers.
The above picture is of Harry talking to a cloud-ghost from the fourth Harry & Silvio story. I'll be sending this stuff off to Top shelf on Monday to be published as a web comic on Top Shelf 2.0.

A Science Fiction Thing

I need some help! I've decided to start another blog, but this one won't be about me. It's called Metachronicals: A history of anachronism and it's about anachronistic themes in science fiction. For example: steampunk stories, dieselpunk stories, stories set in a sci fi atomic age etc. etc.

What I need is the names of writers and artists who do this kind of work. I'm thinking of people like Phillip Reeve, James Blaylock, Mike Mignola, Jay Lake, Tom Kidd, Virgil Finlay, Dave Stevens....And a lot more.

I'll be covering films as well, but to a lesser degree. I'll be concentrating mainly on books and art.
Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated! Thanks!

I can't talk about this post.

A couple of wordless panels for a comic I'm working on. Things are going really well but I'm starting to feel like I don't have half the time I need. I want to have a lot of stuff done before i go to New York. Also I'm considering staring a new blog dedicated to science fiction which would feature other artists and writers mostly.

Studio Pictures

Here are some photographs of taken around my studio. Mostly these are broken toys that I've picked up. I took photography in school but never took to it as a mode of expression. However, I do find that my photos look like my drawings. I think the stuff I put in my studio also reflect my interests and loves.

Looking Ahead

I'm not sure what's going on but all my characters suddenly have huge eyes instead of dots. I think it helps them look more expressive, which I like.
I haven't thought about what I want to accomplish professionally this year until today. Until I sat down to write this post, actually. But I know what I really want to do. I want to do one graphic novel. That is my sole goal. This was a dream I had started to feel was unlikely a couple of years ago. And now it seems to be everywhere I look and be in my reach.
There's lots I want to do this year but if nothing else gets done I hope I have a finished graphic novel by the end of the year.
