I've gone back to some of my characters for Maddy Kettle and have been refining and defining their look. I'm already underway with the book but this was requested by the publisher and it's a good idea. Now I'll have definite sketches of all the secondary characters to draw from. I also changed the look of some of the creatures a bit, taking this opportunity to make improvements. Sometimes this project feels like I'm making a short movie, on top of the story telling there is a huge amount of world building and design going on. Something I've noticed is I'll think I understand the look and personality of a character fully but after a few more sketches something better and closer to the heart of things emerges.Another thing is that Maddy is visually very shape oriented, the characters, the building and landscape are all built on simple shapes, despite all the hatching and shading. This revisiting allowed me to let some characters catch up to that more unified design.
